GETTY The 18-year-old student saw her Wi-Fi access temporarily revoked after downloading the film An 18-year-old student at Bristol University has had Wi-Fi access blocked after she downloaded an illegal copy of Chicken Run. Gianna Mulville-Zanetta downloaded the stop-motion comedy via torrent client BitTorrent. Mulville-Zanetta was caught by Bristol University's IT department,. The 18-year-old student has now been banned from the Wi-Fi network for 20 days. 'I completely forgot I had downloaded it,' said Ms Mulville-Zanetta, who ended up streaming the 2000 Aardman Animations film via a legal platform.
She told: 'I got an email the day after I watched it on Netflix with my friend saying I had been removed from Eduroam – which is our Wi-Fi. 'It took about a day or more to download and that's why I forgot I had it, it took forever.'
Ms Mulville-Zanetta started to use public access Wi-Fi hotspots from The Cloud and her mobile phone's 4G connection during the suspension. The block occurred during exam season, but Gianna Mulville-Zanetta does not believe it had a negative impact on her studies. Despite using BitTorrent herself, Ms Mulville-Zanetta believes illegal downloads are becoming more and more rare amongst her peers, thanks to the ease of streaming film and television series legally online. 'It's so easy to access Netflix and iPlayer that they don't do it as much,' she said. 'Some still do because you have to always have internet to access them, so by downloading you can access it offline.' Ms Mulville-Zanetta believes it was a 'one in a million' chance she was caught. A spokesperson for Bristol University told Newsbeat: 'We received a complaint about this particular student's illegal downloading of a copyrighted film earlier this month from the owners of the movie.
'As a result we temporarily suspended her connection to the wi-fi network.' According to Bristol University, the Wi-Fi connection will be reinstated as soon as the student signs an agreement demonstrating she will adhere to the institute's online guidelines.
